Periodontics in Whitby
Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the gums and supportive tissue around your teeth. We provide periodontal services to keep your child’s gums free from infection or gum disease.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planing are deep cleaning techniques that are used to remove tartar, plaque, and other irritants from your child’s teeth. If your gums become irritated they can be vulnerable to dangerous bacteria. Periodontal scaling is a treatment similar to the scaling your child receives during an oral hygiene appointment, except we will be removing tartar and plaque from above their gum line. Root planing is a technique used to remove imperfections from the roots of your child’s teeth, making them smoother and reducing the risk of inflammation.
While no dentist wants to extract a tooth, extraction is sometimes necessary due to damage, infection, or for orthodontic treatment. We understand that extraction can be traumatic for your child so we do our best to make the process as painless and stress free as possible. Depending on the reason for extracting the tooth we can discuss options for replacing the tooth and restoring your child’s smile.
Frenula are bits of connective tissue inside your mouth. There is a frenum between your upper lip and your upper gums, and one connecting your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. Sometimes children are born “lip” or “tongue-tied,” which means one of the frenula in their mouth is too tight. To treat this we cut the frenum and release the tension. We use a soft-tissue laser to perform frenectomies. Incisions made with the laser are less painful for your child, and they heal faster.
